Backgammon: Running or Blocking
Backgammon requires a very different strategy than casino games like roulette or slots. The basic idea of backgammon is to get all of your pieces around the board, and into your home as quickly as you can. This is known as running, when you start a new game running is usually the normal strategy.
However, your opponent will also start out using this same strategy, inevitably one of the two of you will fall behind in the running, who it is depends on the dice and how well you can play your rolls.
If you’re starting to lose ground running, you can switch to the blocking strategy. This basically means that rather than moving your pieces as quickly as you can around the board, you will try to keep your opponent from moving around. If you are falling behind your opponent, then it is best to play a blocking strategy.
When you are playing a blocking strategy, the two basic concepts are the block and the other is the prime. The block is quite simply a field that has two of your checkers (or more) on it. In putting blocks in fields where your opponent will most likely move to, you will cause him the most trouble.
As you may know, the most statistically likely move in backgammon is to move six steps forward. Therefore, every time you place a block six steps from an opponents checkers, you have a strong block.
